Nights are Forever…and Not in a Good Way

Just as you may find it difficult to sleep peacefully at night, so then may your children experience the same difficulty.That’s when the “ghosties” come out, our household “code word” for when the mind—and imagination—go into overdrive. All of the anger, the fears and the emotions will inevitably choose nighttime to emerge.

Particularly with younger children, it is absolutely normal to experience a regression of sorts, in that they may express a desire to sleep with their siblings or with you.You must obviously consider the ages and genders of your children in deciding whether or not this is appropriate to your household.

After her dad’s death, Kendall expressed the need to sleep with me, and I indulged her that; knowing that given time, she would willingly return to her own bed in her own room. Sure enough, as life slowly began to resume and a normal routine began to emerge in the house, Kendall went back to her own room of her own volition; feeling much more safe and secure.

If your children are younger, they may very well seek comfort in being permitted to sleep with siblings or with you (if practical) for a short time. However, if a substantial amount of time passes and the child does not seem inclined to resume sleeping in his own room and/or on his own, you will want to consult with their physician or pediatrician.
